Chile Looks Into Nuclear Power
Recent reports indicate Chile is considering nuclear power as a way to augment their power grid:
We have the responsibility of being ready for the moment when a decision is made,” Roberto Hojman, the Chilean Commission of Nuclear Power, said on Sunday, quoted by the local press.
At a ceremony to mark the 41st anniversary of the commission, Hojman stressed the need for boosting power supply to meet the increasing demand from the economic development.
He said the situation “makes us consider the option of the nuclear fission as a possible source of electric power,” although “this alternative is not yet put on the agenda.
A more stable source of power could help alleviate the blackouts that have seemed to hit Chile every so often. A large part of Chile was hit with a blackout back in March. And while I was in Santiago I experienced a few blackouts that sent the entire city into darkness. Although it was nice to see the stars, it isn’t a good situation to have an unreliable power supply.
