Practice Hands-Off Tourism

If you are travelling to Chile, please help preserve the natural and historical beauty of the country. Recent events by tourists to Chile have made the news that are of particular interest:

Look, but don’t touch!

A Canadian artist got into trouble on Chile’s Easter Island:

Late last week, local authorities accused Vazan, who arrived on the island in early April, of displacing rocks of archeological value to create sculptures, including one of an octopus. CBC

Fortunately, he has been allowed to leave. Nevertheless, the moral of the story here is: don’t touch!

Don’t Play With Fire!

Earlier this year, fire raged through Chile’s beautiful Torres del Paine National Park:

A Czech tourist started the fire - the worst there in two decades - by dropping a gas cooker when he was camping illegally. … Under Chilean law, he [was] only fined a maximum of $213 as he did not start the fire deliberately. This law applied even though he broke the rules of the park by using a gas burner outside an official camping area. BBC

So enjoy your trip to Chile, but remember to follow the park rules! In so doing, you’ll enjoy a great trip. However, if you start a fire, and you may get sued!
