Moving Glaciers in Search of Gold
Recent news indicates that Barrick Gold Corp. will be mining gold from high in the Andes Mountains. The impressive part of this announcement is that they’ll be moving glaciers to reach their objective.
Barrick had planned to expose the gold under the ice by breaking up part of the glacirs and dumping the ice in nearby spots along Chile’s 13,100 foot-high border with Argentina. The company hasn’t explained how it will reach the gold without disturbing the glaciers
So why go to such lengths? How about $9.35 billion worth of gold?
Chile already has an impressive mining operation in Chuquicamata but this project will surely rival Chuqui in its scale.
