BYU Men’s Soccer Team Plays Chilean Soccer Clubs
The soccer team from my alma mater, Brigham Young University, recently traveled to Chile to play three professional soccer clubs.
According to BYU’s news site:
BYU played against three teams in the top division. The Cougars played Catolica and Universidad de Chile, tying each match 1-1, and then lost to Nublense 3-1.
That isn’t too bad considering BYU was playing professional soccer teams.
Soccer, or fĂștbol as it is known in Chile, is a very popular sport for Chileans. The countries biggest soccer players have celebrity status and are admired by many.
One of BYU’s soccer players, Tyson Miller, who served a mission in Chile (like me) noted:
it was exciting to return, to be able to relate to the members as a soccer player and for the members to see the players as people who like them, share a passion for soccer and are living the gospel.
I have fond memories of playing soccer in the street with kids or behind one of our church buildings.
