New Chilean Holiday: October 31st
Starting this year (2008), Chile has established a new national holiday on October 31st. This holiday is called the “Día Nacional de las Iglesias Evangélicas y Protestantes” or the Day of the Evangelical and Protestant Churches.
October 31, 1517 is when Martin Luther wrote his famous 95 Theses in protest of the sale of indulgences.
Chile is a predominately Catholic country and Chile’s official holiday schedule includes several religious holidays that are heavily influenced by Catholic traditions.
This new holiday does show a more religiously diverse and accepting Chile.
This new October 31st holiday isn’t Halloween. In Chile, they celebrate All Saints Day on November 1st. However, western influence has led to Halloween-like celebrations already happening around the 31st.
As a note, this new holiday will slide if needed to fit next to a weekend.
