Why Getting a “7″ is a Good Thing in Chile

Chilean schools grade their students on a scale from 1.0 to 7.0. The highest grade you can get is a 7.

A 4.0 is considered a passing grade for students. If you get a 7.0, you’re a super star. A 7 is the equivalent of an A+ in the United States.

If you interact with students, understanding this scale will help you understand how they are performing.

As you observe the culture and your surroundings in Chile, you’ll notice that references to this grading scale are used in everyday situations. You may see a reference to it on a commercial, in a telenovela, or even in a conversation with a friend.

For example, someone may say, “Sacaste un siete!” which literally means, “You got a seven!” but implies that you got it right or did a good job.
